Head coach Kyle Shanahan revealed that second-year wideout Jacob Cowing suffered a hamstring injury during practice. The severity of the injury remains unclear, making it a situation worth closely monitoring in the coming days.
"I thought Jake had one of the best OTAs out of anybody on our team in terms of most-improved, the most prepared for it," Shanahan said. "Unfortunately, I think he pulled his hamstring on routes on air today before we started. So, I'd say to just keep on his trajectory. Hopefully, he can stay healthy and keep going to where he did in OTAs, but probably had a little setback today.
"So hopefully, that's better news than what we're guessing out there, and he can get back, and get back to what he was doing in OTAs."
Shanahan noted that the 49ers could consider signing another wide receiver to help bolster depth following Cowing's setback.
Cowing appeared in limited action as a rookie, catching four passes for 80 yards. The 49ers had high hopes for his second season, anticipating that he could take a significant leap forward in 2025.
The wide receiver room is already dealing with injury concerns. Brandon Aiyuk continues to rehab from the ACL and MCL injuries he suffered in October 2024, while second-year wideout Ricky Pearsall is working his way back from the physically unable to perform (PUP) list.
