According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Jennings has approached the 49ers about either securing a new contract or being traded.
"Jennings has approached the 49ers about his request, but little progress has been made, a source told ESPN," Schefter wrote. "If a new deal is not reached by the time training camp starts next week, Jennings plans to request a trade to a team willing to pay him."
As noted by Schefter, Jennings is entering the final year of the two-year, $15.4 million contract he signed in 2024. He's coming off his most productive NFL season, finishing with 77 receptions for 975 yards and six touchdowns while stepping up in place of an injured Brandon Aiyuk.
Although Schefter notes that Jennings is not expected to hold out of training camp, he is unlikely to be a happy participant without a new agreement in place. Veteran players are scheduled to report to camp next week.
With Aiyuk still recovering from the ACL and MCL injuries he suffered in October 2024 and Deebo Samuel now a member of the Washington Commanders, Jennings and second-year wideout Ricky Pearsall are expected to start in Week 1 against the Seattle Seahawks.
"Jennings is following the model that tight end Jonnu Smith used this summer with the Miami Dolphins," Schefter added. "Smith asked the Dolphins for a new deal and, when they would not meet his wishes, he requested a trade and wound up being dealt to the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he signed a one-year, $12 million extension."
San Francisco selected Jennings in the seventh round of the 2020 NFL Draft out of Tennessee. The 28-year-old has totaled 1,938 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns in 60 career games (17 starts).
