After being drafted by the San Francisco 49ers, rookie running back Jordan James expressed his excitement about learning from one of the league's premier players—veteran Christian McCaffrey.

"He's one of the great running backs right now," James said. "He's one of the best in the league right now. It's honestly going to be an honor to go in and learn from him, learn from a great running back like that."


James isn't McCaffrey's only admirer. The All-Pro and former NFL Offensive Player of the Year has garnered praise from both current and former players. One especially enthusiastic supporter happens to be a Super Bowl-winning wide receiver—his father, Ed McCaffrey.

In a recent conversation with DJ Siddiqi of Bet Ideas, Ed McCaffrey shared his belief that, despite dealing with injuries last season, his son is poised for a long and decorated career.

"He loves training, he loves working out, he loves the offseason, because he gets bigger, stronger, faster," Ed said. "If you just focus on that, you enjoy every day, and then you play for as long as you can."

Christian McCaffrey is coming off an injury-plagued 2024 season. He appeared in just four games, missing the first nine weeks due to Achilles tendinitis and then sitting out the final stretch with a posterior cruciate ligament injury.

Now healthy, the 49ers running back is eager to move past the frustration of last season.


"I'm feeling great," McCaffrey said last month. "It's been such a smooth process, a lot of hard work. As soon as that injury happened in Buffalo, I was kind of—this was my goal, to not miss a day of OTAs, be back, ready to go, with nothing hindering me, and that's where I'm at."

Meanwhile, his father remains in awe of what Christian has already accomplished and is confident that more success lies ahead.

"He's competitive, has an incredible work ethic, determined," Ed McCaffrey said. "We were talking about a processor with quarterbacks, he processes probably better than any running back that's ever played the game.

"He's the best receiving running back out of the backfield that's ever played the game — that's just a fact. I think those types of backs, based on the way the passing game has evolved in the NFL, are the type of backs that are going to be highly regarded moving forward."

Both McCaffrey and the 49ers are looking to rebound from a brutal 2024 campaign. While injuries sidelined the running back, the team also struggled on the field, finishing with just six wins and missing the playoffs for the first time since 2020.


McCaffrey and the 49ers hope 2025 tells a very different story.
