Neither the San Francisco 49ers nor quarterback Brock Purdy has publicly disclosed details of their ongoing contract negotiations. Naturally, this has fueled speculation about the potential value of Purdy's extension.

NFL insider Tom Pelissero recently reported that the two sides are "not close" in their discussions.


"Nothing's imminent, from my understanding here," Pelissero said. "But certainly this is a deal that I would anticipate that all parties have a vested interest in getting done before we get to training camp."

However, The Athletic's Dianna Russini doesn't get that sense, offering a more optimistic outlook.

"The sense I'm getting is they're closer than what we think," Russini said on her podcast, Scoop City. "I don't believe Brock Purdy shows up for [the offseason program] if he doesn't feel good that they're near a number that he's happy with. That's how it usually works with players. Very rarely are guys showing up if they're that far apart. It just doesn't work like that.

"So to me, just that action alone tells me that they're closer, but also doing some digging on it. I think this is still moving in a really good direction. I don't think there should be any concern."


If accurate, that's certainly good news for the 49ers, who would prefer to finalize a deal sooner rather than later. The next key date to watch is May 27, when the team begins organized team activities. Ideally, San Francisco will have a contract in place to ensure Purdy participates in those on-field workouts.


When asked to estimate Purdy's potential annual salary, Russini suggested the floor would likely be $50 million.

"I think it probably finishes at 52, maybe 53," she added.
