Speculation continues to swirl around what kind of contract extension quarterback Brock Purdy might receive from the San Francisco 49ers. Will he land a deal comparable to Dak Prescott's $60 million annual average, or will his salary fall further down the list, possibly outside the top 10 highest-paid quarterbacks?

While negotiations are ongoing, one NFL executive expressed doubt that the 49ers will offer Purdy top-of-the-market money, especially considering their leverage.


"People forget with Purdy, the guy has made nothing," the executive told The Athletic's Mike Sando. "If you are Brock Purdy, you are staring two years of franchise tags in the face and $5 million (in 2025 salary)."

In other words, San Francisco controls Purdy's contract situation for the next three seasons at an estimated total cost of $97 million—likely his "best-case scenario" without an extension.

Despite leading the 49ers to two NFC Championship Games and a Super Bowl in his first two seasons, Purdy's critics point to the team's struggles when injuries piled up, arguing that he couldn't elevate the roster beyond six wins in that stretch.

That perceived limitation could work in the 49ers' favor at the negotiating table.

"I am not saying they would pound him, but I have never understood how people think he gets to $60 million (per year on an extension)," the executive added.

However, 49ers owner Jed York remains confident in Purdy's future with the team. He was asked if Purdy is a top-10 quarterback in the NFL.

"I think he is. I think he's great," York responded. "Especially when you combine him with [head coach] Kyle [Shanahan] and you combine him with what we have. He's a heck of a quarterback, and we want him to be here for a long, long time."

York also expressed optimism that a deal will eventually get done.

"I don't negotiate contracts, but any conversations that I've had with Brock, personally, have been great," he said. "So I feel good, and when he's ready, we'll sit down and finish it. It shouldn't be that hard to do."
