The San Francisco 49ers view the 2024 season as a fluke, not a sign of things to come. The team finished 6-11, last in the NFC West, and missed the playoffs—far from their usual standard. All-Pro linebacker Fred Warner, who previously experienced just two losing seasons since being drafted by the 49ers, isn't ready to call this the beginning of a downward trend.

In a conversation with Bryant McFadden of CBS Sports, Warner reflected on the humbling, injury-riddled season and shared his optimism for the future. Warner didn't hesitate to respond when asked if he could imagine the 49ers missing the playoffs again in 2025.


"No, no, of course not," Warner said confidently. "I think this was just one of those years that we needed, honestly. It kind of humbles you. You learn from it.

"We had a bunch of injuries to the guys that we obviously needed throughout the season, but now looking forward to just getting back to dominance, getting back to having an opportunity."

When pressed on whether fans could count on a playoff return next season, Warner responded, "Absolutely. Yes."



Warner will benefit from reuniting with Robert Saleh, who returns to the 49ers as defensive coordinator—a role he previously held from 2017 to 2020. The team hopes Saleh can help re-establish the physical defensive identity that once made the unit one of the most feared in the NFL.


Warner is equally eager for the 49ers to re-sign his teammate, Dre Greenlaw. Together, they form one of the league's top linebacker duos, and staying together would give the defense a significant boost heading into the 2025 season.
