McCaffrey returned for just four games before suffering a PCL injury, sidelining him for the season's final five games. However, according to his father, former NFL wide receiver Ed McCaffrey, the star running back is nearly fully healed and could resume his regular offseason training as early as next week.
"He's doing great," Ed McCaffrey told Front Office Sports in New Orleans ahead of Super Bowl LIX. "He should be fully healthy this week, by next week, and he'll have a full offseason to train."
Ed McCaffrey's media rounds ahead of the Super Bowl stirred up some painful memories, recalling last year's championship loss for his son and the 49ers.
"Unlike me, I still have PTSD from last year's Super Bowl. I haven't recovered yet," Ed McCaffrey admitted. "But he's recovered, and he's healthy. It was a tough season, but I think he's in great shape.
"He's gonna have a full offseason, and I think their team is really going to come back strong next year."
While McCaffrey's 2024 season is one he'd likely prefer to forget, it came on the heels of an impressive 2023 campaign. That year, he led the NFL with a career-high 1,459 rushing yards and topped the league with 2,023 scrimmage yards.
Now close to being fully healthy, McCaffrey aims to return to form and help the 49ers bounce back from a disappointing 6-11 season.
H/t to Grant Cohn of Sports Illustrated for the find.
