Fans have debated Purdy's worth amid an inconsistent season. Injuries to key playmakers have undoubtedly impacted his performance. Still, some argue that if Purdy struggles without a wealth of elite talent around him, he may not warrant a top-tier salary.
FS1's Chris Broussard weighed in on the matter during First Things First, predicting the 49ers might not be willing to offer Purdy the $50 million-plus annual salary many anticipate. Instead, Broussard suggested the team could propose a slightly lower figure—and that Purdy might be wise to accept it.
"If I'm the Niners, Brock, $45 million a year, four years, whatever," Broussard said. "And if he doesn't take that, then ... I got the control. I can see another year of him. And then, you got franchise tags after that."
Broussard views $45 million annually as a reasonable figure for a quarterback like Purdy, acknowledging his potential while emphasizing the need for caution. A larger deal, he warned, could limit the 49ers' ability to maintain a competitive roster.
"I actually think Brock will take that," Broussard added. "I really do, because you're in a great situation, you'll have your guys coming back. I think he'll take that."
Broussard's co-host, Nick Wright, believes the 49ers would be "insane" to sign Purdy to a top-of-the-market deal.
"It is now a big sample of Brock under less-than-perfect circumstances, and it's not been good," Wright explained. "... I don't think this is a good last-impression season before you're trying to get $55 million a year, and the Niners are going to have plenty of options, whether it means making him play it out, or flirting more with Sam Darnold."
