This is encouraging news for the 49ers as they look to rely on Elliott following what is expected to be a season-ending injury to starter Javon Hargrave, who suffered a partially torn triceps in Sunday's loss to the Los Angeles Rams. Hargrave is likely to be placed on injured reserve this Saturday.
"He stepped on someone's foot—I think the last period of practice—kind of rolled his ankle," general manager John Lynch said Friday morning during his weekly radio interview. "We feel like we got some positive news on him. That probably wasn't a typical cart situation, where it was more them just wanting to get him inside. So we'll see.
"We'll call him questionable, I guess. I don't know what our official [designation will be], but a lot of it will be based on how he feels today. I think, long-term, we feel good about it."
Additionally, wide receiver Deebo Samuel practiced for the second day in a row after missing Week 3 against the Rams due to a calf strain.
Lynch noted that there's a chance Samuel could play on Sunday against the New England Patriots.
"If he's ready, if he's hit all the markers, that would be a really nice surprise to have him back," Lynch said. "But I think that is to be determined here. Today will be a big day in that process."
Tight end George Kittle, sidelined with a hamstring injury, practiced throughout the week and appears to be progressing well. On Thursday, head coach Kyle Shanahan expressed optimism that Kittle would suit up this weekend against the Patriots. Kittle shared his excitement, stating, "I'm feeling fantastic."
