One 49ers teammate, however, wasn't surprised by Jennings' sudden surge in production. Deebo Samuel, who watched the game on television due to a calf strain, was thrilled to see Jennings showcase his skills to the NFL world.
"I'm watching the game and, like, that man catching everything," Samuel said this week on his Cleats and Convos podcast. "I don't got too many words for what he was doing. It was JJ just being JJ, going out there, and taking advantage of every opportunity that he gets. That's just him.
"I see it every day at practice, every day at work. It's just his confidence. His confidence is like, 'I'm the best player in the world,' and so that's what makes him who he really is."
Although eager to return to the field, Samuel remains sidelined with his calf injury and is expected to miss at least one more game. Yet, he was confident Jennings would capitalize on his opportunity in his absence.
"When the opportunity presents itself with JJ, he always go out there and just gives it his all and makes all the plays that come his way," Samuel said.
Jennings has 18 catches for 276 yards and three touchdowns so far this season. He'll aim for another standout performance when the 49ers host the New England Patriots at Levi's Stadium this Sunday.
