Former San Francisco 49ers running back Frank Gore said he intends to sign a one-day contract to retire as a Niner in the next couple of months. After that, he hopes to work in the front office with the team one day.

Gore, who San Francisco selected out of the University of Miami in the third round of the 2005 NFL Draft, is the 49ers' all-time leading rusher with 11,073 yards, second in rushing touchdowns with 64, and 11th on the team's all-time scoring list with 458 points.


In his 10-year career with San Francisco, Gore rushed for 11,073 yards, 2,883 receiving yards, and 75 total touchdowns.

After leaving the 49ers in 2015, Gore played six more years, including three with the Colts and one season each with Miami, Buffalo, and the New York Jets.

Fans on social media expressed their love and admiration for Gore, who could be considered the greatest running back in franchise history.




Gore will retire third on the all-time rushing list with 16,000 yards, behind two of the greatest running backs to ever play the position in Walter Payton and Emmitt Smith.




Some detractors believe Gore's credentials are not good enough to make the Hall of Fame.




Gore had achieved other accomplishments throughout his 16-year career, such as being named the 2006 NFL Most Improved Player, Pro Football Hall of Fame All-2010s Team, Pro Football Reference second-team All-2010s Team, and earning five Pro Bowl selections.

Gore had an injury-plagued college career at the University of Miami. He suffered ACL injuries in his left knee in 2002 and 2003 and played behind star running backs Clinton Portis and Willis McGahee.

Notable running backs drafted before the 49ers selected Gore with the No. 65 overall pick are Ronnie Brown, Cedric Benson, Carnell "Cadillac" Williams, J.J. Arrington, and Eric Shelton.
