Head coach Kyle Shanahan has always indicated that the 49ers plan to start Garoppolo this season, giving the No. 3 overall pick, Trey Lance, time to sit behind the veteran and continue learning the offense. Besides, Lance is still recovering from the chipped finger bone he suffered during the team's preseason finale against the Las Vegas Raiders.
A team's starting quarterback is typically among those scheduled to speak with reporters as game-preparation practices begin. That is Garoppolo this week. While Shanahan has avoided officially naming the veteran as the Week 1 starter because there was no strategic advantage in doing so, this week's schedule seems to have made the team's plan official.
This week, the 49ers will hold three practices—one each on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday—before traveling to Michigan for Sunday's game against the Detroit Lions. The team held a practice this morning, but the game-plan installation had not yet began.
Lance's status on Wednesday will be more important than today's. That and the days that follow will be more telling when it comes to his Week 1 availability. Today, Lance did participate in practice—albeit limited—without the stint he wore last week around the index finger on his throwing hand, but the rookie quarterback still did not attempt any passes.
