"We haven't talked about it, which is probably a big tweet thing, but McGlinchey's going to be here," Shanahan said. "So, without me ever thinking of that, no, we haven't talked about it, but don't worry, Mike, you'll be alright, man. Obviously, I've got to talk to John (Lynch), talk to Jed (York), but I didn't even realize that was up next year, which means I feel pretty good about McGlinchey."
McGlinchey has endured a lot of criticism as he has seemingly struggled this season. While his Pro Football Focus run-blocking grade of 91.1 for this season is a career-high, his 57.7 pass-blocking grade is a career-low.
"I think [the criticism] is something everyone needs to go through, and then you see how it affects you the next year," Shanahan commented.
The coach recalled hearing criticism about his father, former NFL coach Mike Shanahan, and realizes it's part of the job.
Added Shanahan: "That's why I think it's a good thing for Mike to go through that stuff because I think it can make him stronger. He's made of the right stuff, he's a good football player, he's going to have a great career, and I plan on it being here. And I hope he takes it the right way, and it makes him a better player next year for it."
The 49ers selected McGlinchey out of Notre Dame with the No. 9 overall pick in 2018. He has started all 15 games this season. San Francisco will need to decide this offseason if it wants to pick up McGlinchey's fifth-year option, keeping him with the team through the 2022 season.
