NFL.com's "Around The NFL" crew--Gregg Rosenthal, Dan Hanzus, Marc Sessler and Chris Wesseling--aired a Friday podcast naming several veterans who could be surprise cuts heading into the season.
Specifically, Rosenthal called out Hyde during podcast game topic, "What's More Likely?":
"What's more likely: Brandon Albert, left tackle of the Jaguars, gets cut at the end of training camp after being a pain all offseason? Or Jamaal Charles, a future Hall of Famer in my mind, gets cut at the end of training camp? Or Carlos Hyde as a surprise cut — I heard this one from a little birdy, insider."
Who is this little birdy that Rosenthal is suggesting? Despite it being several weeks into the offseason, this hasn't been the first time we've heard rumblings about Hyde, who might be a poor fit in the new zone-blocking scheme under head coach Kyle Shananhan and running backs coach Bobby Turner.
Rookie running back Joe Williams projects as an ideal one-cut running back for the new coaches' scheme. It's also worth noting that Hyde has failed to eclipse the 1,000-yard rushing mark in his three seasons with the 49ers due to injuries.
Rosenthal went into more detail today in 'NFL training camp: Thirteen potential surprise cuts':
Carlos Hyde, RB, San Francisco 49ers: Coach Kyle Shanahan was going to be "sick" and dreaming of rookie Joe Williams if the team didn't draft him, according to the MMQB's Peter King. So general manager John Lynch wound up trading up to get a guy in Williams who wasn't even on his draft board.
