Undrafted rookie D-linemen have a legitimate chance at earning a role with 49ers

SANTA CLARA — The 49ers are scheduled to hold a joint practice with the Tennessee Titans on Tuesday.Two days later, they will play their first of three preseason games.

So, it will not be long before the rest of the NFL will get a glimpse of things that, up to this point, have been on display only on the 49ers’ practice field.

Two of the 49ers’ undrafted rookie defensive tackles — Bryson Eason and James Thompson — might have the most to gain from that kind of exposure.

“It rarely happens where two guys that you think are going to get drafted, somewhere between the fourth and seventh round, and then for both of them to fall out and to be able to get both of them,” 49ers defensive coordinator Kris Kocurek said on Sunday.

“We saw them as dudes that could compete for 53-man roster spots.”

The 49ers ended up recruiting both Thompson and Eason as undrafted free agents. Their contract for Thompson included $277,500 guaranteed, which was the 10th-highest for an undrafted rookie in the NFL this year. San Francisco guaranteed Eason $272,500.
