49ers icon Roger Craig shares vascular dementia diagnosis in Hall of Fame speech

Legendary running back Roger Craig made a startling disclosure Saturday during his pre-recorded acceptance speech into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.Toward the end of his 10-minute address, Craig revealed he has been diagnosed with vascular dementia.

Vascular dementia, the second-most common dementia diagnosis behind Alzheimer’s, is caused by conditions that limit blood flow to the brain and can lead to problems with memory, thinking, and behavior.

Craig, 66, played 11 seasons in the NFL from 1983 to ’93. He played for the 49ers during his first eight seasons as a professional.

“Today, there is another chapter I want to share,” Craig said in his remarks that were played at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, Ohio, and broadcast to a national-television audience.

“I’ve been diagnosed with vascular dementia that my doctors believe may be related, at least in part, to the concussions I experienced during my career.”

Craig had not spoken publicly since his election was announced as one of the five-person Class of 2026 on Feb. 5 during the NFL Honors show at the Palace of Fine...
