SANTA CLARA — Defensive coordinator Raheem Morris appears to have unleashed the 49ers defensive backs and Mac Jones can sense the difference.Jones’ second play from scrimmage during team drills on Thursday was a pass intended for receiver Jordan Watkins. Defensive back Jack Jones jumped the route and intercepted the throw while his defensive teammates on the sidelines jumped up in celebration.
“I feel like there’s a lot more plays being made on the ball compared to last year, which is a good thing,” Jones said after Thursday’s practice. “Just contested plays. They’ve done a good job over there. I’m excited to see them in a real game and see what it looks like.”
Renardo Green, who had a challenging second season after a breakout rookie campaign, again has seemed to find his place in the defense. The Florida State product has appeared more assured in his role, as well as more vocal since Morris’ arrival.
