SANTA CLARA — Quarterback Brock Purdy has earned a nickname from Raheem Morris, the 49ers’ first-year defensive coordinator.And he also has earned immense respect from Morris, who has been impressed by watching him work up close.
“The Layer King has some really intensive intensity, and I like that about him,” Morris said.
“It’s really fun, some of those call-it periods. And you get a chance to go in the back with the offense, and you call your play and you listen to him and hear him operate.”
Purdy, who thrives with the intermediate passing game, and those layered throws over linebackers and in front of safeties, was operating at full efficiency on Thursday.
As he completed passes at every level. Coming off a day when he completed 14 of 16 passes with almost entirely high-percentage throws, Purdy aired it out against Morris’ defense.
The deepest throws of the day were connections to Malik Turner against safety Ji’Ayir Brown and to newcomer KhaDarel Hodge against cornerback Darrell Luter.
