SANTA CLARA — There is no guarantee backup quarterback Mac Jones will step on the field for the 49ers this season.But he also has known for a while that he is not going anywhere.
That point was made to Jones after last season, when he started eight games in relief of starter Brock Purdy.
Jones signed a two-year contract with the 49ers before the 2025 NFL season, and there never was a thought the 49ers would trade him — even after his stock reached a high point.
“Yeah, there was definitely obviously a lot of speculation,” Jones said on Wednesday. “And, honestly, after a long year, I was just trying to enjoy with (it) my teammates and look back on the season. But there was some stuff out there and it was made very clear to me that I was going to be here from this organization.”
Jones helped keep the 49ers’ season afloat, as the team went 5-3 with him as the starter after Purdy missed time due to a toe injury. He completed 69.2 percent of his pass attempts for 2,151 yards with 13 touchdowns, six interceptions and a career-best passer rating of 97.4.
