Why 49ers QB Brock Purdy's secret weapon vs. Seahawks isn't what you might think

SANTA CLARA — The 49ers are heading into hostile territory for Saturday’s divisional clash with a secret weapon — Brock Purdy’s ability to stay calm.San Francisco is set to play in the conference semi-finals in the hostile home of the Seattle Seahawks — the venue where Purdy threw his first two interceptions of the 2025 NFL season. Two turnovers might leave an average quarterback skittish and unsure of himself, but coach Kyle Shanahan explained that is not the case for the leader of the 49ers’ offense.“I think the big thing is that Brock doesn’t get rattled,” Shanahan said on Thursday. “You can be as loud as you want, they’re still probably not going to hear you there, especially if you’re in the gun. And then we know they’ll be that much louder this week. But I think it’s nothing really rattles Brock. He stays the same.”The coach’s statement rings true. Whether it’s a blowout win or a heartbreaking loss, Purdy’s behavior in his post game media availability is steady, assured, and calm. It is what impressed Shanahan about his quarterback in the fourth quarter in the team’s wild-card win in Philadelphia less than one week ago.“That’s what I thought was so impressive, having that interception with like eight minutes to go,” Shanahan said. “We lose the lead, and the way he came back and played the next drive after that, is the perfect example of that’s what I mean by you can kind of see people’s character, what type of people they are, on the silent tape.“And a guy who can act like that on that silent tape describes exactly the type of dude he is.”Purdy seems to enjoy and thrive in the noise and challenge of an adverse environment. Since becoming the starting quarterback, he hasn’t lost at Lumen Field. Not even in that Week 1 game where he turned the ball over twice.“Yeah, it’s one of the hardest places to play when it comes to the environment and the fans,” Purdy said. “Every down matters. You have to be on point with everything, your communication, the operation and things like that because it all matters, it all adds up.“But, when you’re on top of it and you can execute on the road, it can feel really good when you do your job at a high level. So, tough place to play, but it’s worth it if you’re on top of your stuff.”Those are the 49ers’ goals — start fast, quiet the crowd. Purdy and his offense only managed to put three points on the board when they played the Seahawks just two weeks ago in their regular-season finale. This time, the club will have All-Pro Trent Williams back in the lineup, which they hope will give the 49ers’ ground game a boost.Still, outside of team headquarters, the No. 1-seeded Seahawks are an overwhelming favorite. But being a 7.0 underdog has a different effect on Purdy, who shared that his team has been motivated by the doubt.“It’s almost this mentality of like everybody’s out against us and we’ve got to defend ourselves and fight,” Purdy explained. “I don’t know. It’s been a thing that I sort of have learned that as I’ve played, I really do like it. I know a lot of guys in the locker room do.“If you’re in the NFL as a competitor, you’re going to love that challenge. So, that’s the good thing about it.
