Broncos' D.J. Jones reveals tips he gave to comparable 49ers rookie CJ West

SANTA CLARA — The Denver Broncos owned the No&period; 3 scoring defense in the NFL last season&period;For most of their joint practice with the 49ers on Thursday, they controlled the action&period;But the 49ers’ offense got going late with a couple touchdowns during periods that featured starters against starters&period;“When you go up against a group like theirs, especially defensively, what they did last year statistically in all their phases, and the guys they added, we knew that was a really good challenge for us,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said after practice&period;Quarterback Brock Purdy had a difficult time getting anything going through most of practice&period; The Broncos administered a steady pass rush with sticky coverage on the back end&period;Purdy could not connect with wide receiver Ricky Pearsall on at least their first three tries during 11-on-11 work&period; The pair also had a difficult time finding a connection in 1-on-1 and 7-on-7 work&period;Pearsall finally caught a short pass against Broncos cornerback Patrick Surtain II, the NFL Defensive Player of the Year last season&period;Then, Purdy hooked up with Pearsall on a 30-yard touchdown against the coverage of first-round draft pick Jahdae Barron, the No&period; 20 overall selection&period;It was an up-and-down day for the 49ers’ offense, which was to be expected against one of the top defenses in the league&period;“For them to come and give us different looks and have a couple bad plays, and how you finish practice is a big thing,” Purdy said&period; “I think it was a good day, overall&period;”Purdy’s last pass attempt of the day was a 14-yard touchdown pass to Demarcus Robinson against Denver starting cornerback Riley Moss&period;The touchdowns allowed the 49ers and Purdy to finish on a strong note after the Broncos’ defense set the tone through most of the two-hour practice&period;“We put him in a lot of challenging positions,” Shanahan said of Purdy, “and I thought handled most of them pretty well&period;”Here are other observations and notes from the practice that featured the 49ers’ offense against the Broncos’ defense:— Running back Christian McCaffrey had an active day, and was a big part of the team’s two-minute drill with a 15-yard reception and a running play for a nice gain&period;— The 49ers had very little success throwing to Surtain’s side&period; Purdy challenged Surtain with a fade in the end zone&period; Robinson went up and got both hands on the ball, but Surtain broke up the pass&period; On the play, Robinson beat the cornerback on the other side for the score&period;— Rookie running back Jordan James sustained a broken finger and is expected to miss a couple weeks after undergoing surgery&period;— Left tackle Trent Williams did not take part in 11-on-11 work during practice&period;— Kicker Jake Moody had a perfect day, as he connected on field goals of 28, 33, 36, 40, 46, 51 and 54 yards during a special-team period&period; He also hit a 52-yarder to cap a two-minute drive at the end of practice&period;— Mac Jones led the second-team offense to a field goal in a two-minute drill with pass completions to Junior Bergen, Jordan Watkins and Brayden Willis&period; Willis made a diving catch to set up Moody’s field goal&period;— Third quarterback Carter Bradley looked up with Watkins on a deep crossing route&period;— Wide receiver Terique Owens made a nice catch of a Jones pass on a deep corner route&period;— The Broncos are counting on three former 49ers on their defense this season&period; Dre Greenlaw did not practice as he recovers from a quadriceps injury he sustained last week in practice&period; Safety Talanoa Hufanga and nose tackle D&period;J&period; Jones had good practices&period; Hufanga had an active practice to lead a high-energy Broncos unit&period;Download and follow the 49ers Talk Podcast
