49ers sign running back Tevin Coleman to two-year deal

Last year, head coach Kyle Shanahan said he wanted to create competition throughout the 49ers' roster in 2019. And it appears there could be no shortage of that in their backfield. On Wednesday, the 49ers agreed to contract terms with running back Tevin Coleman, a league source said. The two-year deal is worth $10 million, ESPN reported. Coleman, 25, is coming off a season with Atlanta in which he had career highs in rushing yards (800) and yards per carry (4.8) while making 14 of his 20 career starts. Coleman will join Jerick McKinnon, a major 2018 free-agent signing who missed the season with a torn ACL, and Matt Breida in the backfield. Last year, Breida rushed for 814 yards and ranked fourth in the NFL in yards per carry (5.3) despite being dogged by a sprained ankle for much of the season. In his past three seasons, Coleman has averaged 981 yards from scrimmage, 4.4 yards a carry, 11.1 yards per catch and scored 28 touchdowns. Shanahan is quite familiar with Coleman after they spent two seasons together in Atlanta when Shanahan was the Falcons' offensive coordinator.
