Shanahan, of course, remains the Falcons offensive coordinator and can't be officially hired by the 49ers until Atlanta's season ends. Shanahan, 37, had identified Fangio as his top pick to serve as defensive coordinator. Fangio is a 31-year NFL veteran who has been a defensive coordinator for the past 17 seasons.
