According to the NFL transaction report, the San Francisco 49ers have placed running back Patrick Taylor on the injured reserve list, ending his season for the second consecutive year.
To fill Taylor's roster spot, the 49ers re-signed running back Khalil Herbert, who was released by the team on August 17.
Herbert (5-9, 212) was originally selected by the Chicago Bears in the sixth round (217th overall) of the 2021 NFL Draft. Throughout his five-year NFL career with the Bears (2021-24), the Cincinnati Bengals (2024), and the New York Jets (2025), he has appeared in 63 games, including 13 starts, and recorded 416 carries for 1,957 yards and nine touchdowns. He has also added 54 receptions for 316 yards and two touchdowns.
In 2025, Herbert appeared in seven games with the Jets, totaling 16 carries for 52 yards and one reception for four yards.
After three seasons with the Green Bay Packers (2021-23), Taylor signed with the 49ers in 2024. He recorded 39 carries for a career-high 183 rushing yards and one touchdown that season, bringing his career totals to 444 rushing yards and two touchdowns while averaging 4.3 yards per attempt.
Taylor re-signed with the 49ers in 2025 on a one-year deal before being placed on injured reserve ahead of the season. San Francisco re-signed the running back to another one-year contract on March 24.
