There is no denying that the San Francisco 49ers have one of the NFL's most impressive rosters, with star power that includes Christian McCaffrey, Fred Warner, George Kittle, Nick Bosa, Brock Purdy, Mike Evans, and more.
The biggest question surrounding the 49ers, at least in the minds of many analysts, is whether the team can stay healthy throughout the 2026 season. So far in training camp, several players have dealt with injuries and other physical issues. The good news is that, with a few exceptions, most of those setbacks are not expected to be long-term concerns.
The 49ers have struggled to stay healthy in recent seasons, and 2025 was no exception. The team dealt with several significant injuries but still managed to reach the playoffs.
Several key contributors are also returning from major injuries, including Warner, Bosa, and Kittle. Meanwhile, McCaffrey has not practiced since August 8 after experiencing "tightness."
The hope is that San Francisco will have better luck on the health front this season. NFL Media analyst Bucky Brooks believes that if the 49ers can keep their key players healthy, there isn't a team in the league they can't beat.
"If their guys return, this is certainly one of the tougher teams," Brooks said during an interview on Bay Area radio station 95.7 The Game. "Here's the thing, the division is a heavyweight division. Those three teams, the Niners, the Rams, the Seahawks, they all could win the big one."
Many analysts predict that the 49ers will fall behind the Los Angeles Rams and Seattle Seahawks in the NFC West race this season, and much of that skepticism stems from the team's injury history.
"The thing is, it comes down to a war of attrition," Brooks continued. "And unfortunately, for whatever the reason, the Niners have always kind of been banged up and beat up. I know they've talked about changing their practice habits and some of those other things, but they have got to get their guys to the starting line and to the finish line, because if they're able to preserve the health of their stars, there's not a team that they can't beat.
"The issue has been that they've been unable to do that. So, if they can figure that part out, look, the Niners have as good a chance as anybody in the division to win it all."
Health could ultimately determine how far the 49ers go in 2026. San Francisco has enough star power and talent to compete with any team in the NFL, but keeping its best players on the field will be critical if the team hopes to keep pace with its NFC West rivals and make a deep playoff run.
