Offensive notes
Quarterback Brock Purdy finished the day 12-of-17, per ESPN's Nick Wagoner, while quarterback Mac Jones went 17-of-20. Overall, it was a solid practice for the two 49ers quarterbacks sitting atop the depth chart.
Jones connected with wide receivers Will Pauling and Wesley Grimes for touchdowns during red-zone drills. He also threw a deep pass to wide receiver De'Zhaun Stribling against coverage from defensive back Larry Worth III.
Purdy also connected with Stribling for a 25-yard touchdown, with the receiver going against cornerback Deommodore Lenoir.
Wide receiver Deebo Samuel continues to line up at multiple positions and is showing good hands in practice. He took several handoffs and pitches out of the backfield. Samuel also appeared to be shaken up after a catch along the left sideline but returned to practice after sitting out a few plays.
During one-on-one drills, Samuel hauled in a deep pass from Purdy, beating cornerback Renardo Green.
Wide receiver Malik Turner hauled in a deep pass from Purdy despite good coverage from the defense.
Wide receiver Jacob Cowing returned to practice this weekend and was shaken up on a deep pass along the left side of the field from Purdy that was knocked away by safety Marques Sigle. However, Cowing continued practicing and later hauled in a 45-yard pass from Purdy, beating coverage from Lenoir.
Purdy also had nice connections with wide receivers Mike Evans, Stribling, and Samuel. The 49ers quarterback appears to be developing good chemistry with his wideouts. Evans made a nice reception from Purdy despite tight coverage from Lenoir and Sigle.
"Mike's a really, really smart guy," Kubiak said of Evans after practice. "He is on it. He's out there competing and getting better. Today, we got him in one-on-ones. He ran some good routes, and I just like his growth every day.
"Mike has the right mindset that he's just out there to get better. He wants to make our team better, and that's what it takes. So, I'm really happy with where he's at."
The running backs also got involved in the passing game. Patrick Taylor Jr. had three receptions, while Zamir White and Khalil Herbert caught two passes each. Herbert hauled in a short pass from Jones and bolted down the left sideline for a nice gain. Sincere McCormick also had a reception.
Defensive notes
Undrafted rookie defensive tackle James Thompson Jr. filled in for C.J. West during team drills after West was shaken up and left practice. Thompson made the most of the opportunity, recording several run stops and getting in on a would-be sack during team drills.
Cornerback Renardo Green has had a solid training camp. However, he was flagged for pass interference on a deep pass to wide receiver Mike Evans and was later called for holding.
"After he defended a throw for Evans in the end zone that fell incomplete, he turned to the official and offered surprise that he didn't get a hat trick of flags," Wagoner wrote.
Cornerback Jack Jones, a training camp standout, broke up a pass from quarterback Mac Jones, while safety Ashtyn Davis broke up another Jones pass. Safety Marques Sigle also broke up a deep ball intended for wide receiver Jacob Cowing.
Cornerback Upton Stout displayed good coverage against wide receiver De'Zhaun Stribling on one play, forcing an incompletion and a defensive stop.
Defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa continues to look like a force for the 49ers. He recorded a would-be sack during red-zone drills with the offense taking the snap near the goal line.
Two plays later, Stout made the defensive stop on fourth-and-short, breaking up a Purdy throw headed for the corner of the end zone.
