Brock Purdy's critics may soon have to dig deeper into their bag of excuses to diminish what the San Francisco 49ers quarterback has accomplished throughout his career. Purdy is on track to break an NFL passing record currently held by Aaron Rodgers and Lamar Jackson.
Purdy currently owns a 104.0 career passer rating. However, he is 147 pass attempts shy of the 1,500 attempts required to qualify for the record officially. He'll likely reach that mark around Week 5.
Rodgers and Jackson both lead the category with a 102.2 career passer rating.
Bleacher Report's Brad Gagnon envisions Purdy officially claiming the record early this season, provided he avoids a significant drop-off in 2026. However, the 49ers quarterback will need to continue playing at his typically high level to maintain the record.
"This isn't a milestone-based record, so Purdy can break it and then hand it back quite quickly to Jackson, Rodgers, or someone else (Joe Burrow is also in the mix at 101.1)," Gagnon wrote.
With so many weapons around him, Purdy should have a strong opportunity to take over the No. 1 spot. The 49ers upgraded his receiving corps this offseason by signing Mike Evans and drafting De'Zhaun Stribling. Both have impressed during training camp.
San Francisco also still has versatile running back Christian McCaffrey and tight end George Kittle, who could return from a torn Achilles in time for Week 1. Additionally, the hope is that defensive coordinator Raheem Morris can improve the defense, giving the 49ers the ammunition to contend in a tough NFC West.
