The Washington Commanders were expected to add a veteran wide receiver to bolster their offense in 2026, and San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk was convinced that opportunity would be his. However, those expectations may need a significant adjustment after NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported that the Commanders are set to sign Stefon Diggs.

What does this mean for Aiyuk, who reportedly purchased a $10 million estate in Loudoun County, Virginia—the location of the Commanders' training facility—while expecting to play for Washington in 2026?

Aiyuk has only himself to blame for his current situation. He could have forced the 49ers' hand by filing for NFL reinstatement—he remains on the reserve/left squad list—and reporting to the team. That likely would have forced San Francisco to release the wide receiver, allowing him to sign elsewhere freely.

Instead, Aiyuk has stated that he does not plan to file for reinstatement and spent the offseason damaging his reputation with a series of unusual social media attacks directed at the 49ers. Those actions likely caused interested teams to reconsider pursuing the veteran receiver.

For now, Aiyuk does not count toward the 49ers' roster limit and is not receiving a salary from the team. It remains unclear what his NFL future holds or whether he will have an opportunity to play during the 2026 season.

Aiyuk has not appeared in a game since 2024, when he suffered a torn ACL and MCL. His relationship with the 49ers deteriorated after he reportedly failed to meet contractual rehabilitation obligations, prompting the team to void his guaranteed money. Aiyuk then cut off communication with the organization, leading to his placement on the rarely used reserve/left squad list.

"I think it's safe to say that he's played his last snap with the Niners," general manager John Lynch said in January. "It's unfortunate—a situation that just went awry."
