49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk appears to take shot at Kyle Shanahan after car accident

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan accepted responsibility Tuesday for the car accident that left him with a broken nose, three broken ribs, a broken hand, a severe concussion, and facial injuries requiring 40 stitches.

Shanahan explained that the initial police report contained a clerical error, incorrectly placing the blame for the accident on the other driver, a 21-year-old woman. He said it was his vehicle that drifted into oncoming traffic, resulting in a head-on collision with a Mercedes-Benz. Fortunately, the other driver was not injured.

Shortly after Shanahan addressed the incident, wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk—who has spent much of the offseason publicly criticizing the 49ers amid his ongoing standoff with the team—shared two cryptic messages on Instagram that appear to be a response to the coach's accident.

"You can't win the race if you crash out," Aiyuk wrote on Instagram.

He added, "Keep yo head up and stay in yo own lane. You gone win."

Aiyuk did not mention Shanahan by name in the posts. However, their timing has fueled speculation that they were related to Shanahan's recent comments about the accident.

The veteran receiver has made it clear that he hopes the 49ers will release him so he can sign elsewhere, with the Washington Commanders being his preferred destination. Aiyuk remains on the reserve/left squad list and has indicated he has no intention of seeking reinstatement. Doing so and reporting back to the team would likely prompt the 49ers to immediately grant his request for a release.

For now, Aiyuk does not count against the 49ers' roster limit and is not receiving a salary from the team.

Aiyuk has not played since suffering ACL and MCL injuries during the 2024 season. Tensions between the two sides escalated after the 49ers voided his guaranteed money, reportedly due to an alleged failure to meet contractual rehabilitation obligations. Aiyuk later cut off communication with the organization, prompting the team to place him on the reserve/left squad list.
