San Francisco 49ers cornerback Upton Stout appears poised to lock down the nickel role heading into the 2026 season. The second-year defensive back says this training camp has been a valuable opportunity to build on his rookie campaign by competing against an upgraded group of receivers.

The 49ers overhauled their receiving corps this offseason, adding future Hall of Famer Mike Evans, drafting rookie De'Zhaun Stribling, and reuniting with Deebo Samuel.


For Stout, those additions have created exactly the kind of competition he wants. He knows that consistently matching up against talented receivers will accelerate his development.

Evans provided one of training camp's highlight moments last week when he hauled in a leaping six-yard touchdown catch over Stout in the end zone. Rather than dwell on the play, the young cornerback viewed it as a valuable learning experience.

"I feel like he's a Hall of Famer, and nobody's going to play in the red zone like he plays," Stout said on Wednesday. "And how he uses his arms, gets physical. I feel like that's going to be a good challenge for me."

While Stribling has been sidelined with hamstring tightness, his early performances in training camp have generated plenty of buzz. The rookie has consistently showcased reliable hands and has quickly become a favorite target of the 49ers' quarterbacks.

"He's going to be a dog," Stout said of Stribling. "I like the way he uses his hands and his speed, so he's going to be a good addition for us, for sure."


Stout added that Stribling can create separation at every level of the field and believes the rookie has the tools to become an outstanding route runner.

"I feel like he's going to be a good route-running receiver when it comes to it," he said.

Wednesday's practice presented another challenge, as Stout matched up against Samuel during a one-on-one red-zone drill. It's exactly the type of competition he embraces.

"It's just good work," Stout said. "Anytime I feel like I see the best receiver, I always want to go against the best because I want to be the best. So, anytime I see Deebo run out there, I'm trying to run out there and get that work."

Asked what motivates him, Stout pointed to the people who have doubted him throughout his football journey.


"I'd say just being young, doubted, hearing what I couldn't do, what I can do, and things like that, people trying to put you in a box, and not really letting that box dictate the real outcome," Stout said.
