The San Francisco 49ers overhauled their wide receiver room this offseason, adding Mike Evans, Christian Kirk, and rookie De'Zhaun Stribling to help replace departed veterans Jauan Jennings, Kendrick Bourne, and Skyy Moore.

Meanwhile, Brandon Aiyuk is widely expected to be off the roster before the start of the 2026 season.


Despite the significant changes, tight end George Kittle believes this year's group could be one of the deepest and most competitive receiving corps the 49ers have fielded in years.

"This is like our probably most depth we've had in the wide receiver room," Kittle said. "Like one of the most competitive wide receiver rooms we've had. So, I'm just looking forward to seeing all of the competition."

One player generating buzz is 2024 fourth-round draft pick Jacob Cowing, who impressed throughout organized team activities (OTAs). Even Evans, the accomplished veteran entering his 13th NFL season, has taken notice.

"He has a lot of juice, and he can add a lot to this team," Evans said. "The speed down the field, the quickness. He's having a few really good weeks, and he's made a lot of plays."

With Evans, Kirk, Stribling, and former first-round pick Ricky Pearsall appearing to have roster spots locked up, Cowing could be among the receivers battling for one of the remaining jobs during training camp.


According to ESPN's Nick Wagoner, Cowing consistently stood out during San Francisco's offseason program, making explosive plays downfield in 7-on-7 drills. It's a familiar storyline. He flashed throughout last year's offseason before a hamstring injury derailed his development and prevented him from carving out a meaningful role.

A healthy training camp could change that in 2026.

"Cowing was unable to capitalize on a strong spring last year as a series of hamstring injuries kept him out all season," Wagoner noted. "If he can stay healthy, he should have a chance to carve out a role as a returner with some opportunities in the passing game."

Cowing and the 49ers' veterans are scheduled to report for training camp on Saturday, July 25, one week after the rookies arrive. The first practice is set for Sunday, July 26, where the young receiver will have an opportunity to continue building momentum and strengthen his case for a roster spot.
