That's why I want to highlight three defenders who could really help the 49ers' defense reach a new level in 2026.
Renardo Green
I've liked Renardo Green's game for a long time, and there's a good reason for that.
Cornerback is a key position in football. If Green becomes a true lockdown corner, it could change everything for the defense.
A strong secondary gives the pass rush more time, lets coaches call more aggressive plays, and makes things tougher for opposing quarterbacks.
Picture offenses trying to face Deommodore Lenoir on one side and a rising Green on the other. That would be tough for any quarterback.
If Green makes big improvements in 2026, the whole defense will benefit.
Ji'Ayir Brown
Ji'Ayir Brown might be the biggest wild card on this defense.
No one doubts his talent. We've already seen his instincts, range, and playmaking. Now, he just needs to be more consistent.
Great safety play helps defenses hide their coverages, play more aggressively, and fix mistakes before they turn into big plays.
If Brown can cut down on mental mistakes and become a steady last line of defense, the 49ers' defense will be much more dangerous.
Deommodore Lenoir
Deommodore Lenoir might be the most underrated player on the entire defense.
Every season, he seems to improve. Every season, his role continues to grow.
Lenoir has developed into more than just a quality cornerback—he's becoming one of the leaders of the secondary.
If he reaches an All-Pro level in 2026, everything changes. Coverage tightens, quarterbacks hesitate, and the defense gains even more flexibility.
His impact extends far beyond his individual matchup.
Why It Matters
The floor of this defense is already high because of the talent on the roster. The question isn't whether the 49ers can be good. The question is whether they can be dominant.
Championship defenses rely on player development just as much as star power, and that's why Green, Brown, and Lenoir are so important.
If all three take meaningful steps forward, the 49ers' defense has a chance to become one of the NFL's best. And that's what could ultimately determine just how far this team goes in 2026.
